Pros and cons of AutoCAD LT, desktop peers, free 2D CAD, and BravoCAD when contractors need to open and edit DWG.

Contractors look for an AutoCAD LT alternative when seats are expensive, when the programs are more advanced than what they need, when training gets too hard, when specialized features are missing, or when installs on site PCs are a hassle.

Despite what many think, you do not need AutoCAD to work with DWG. Several programs open and save the format, including BravoCAD. AutoCAD LT

  • AutoCAD licenses get expensive fast, and AutoCAD LT may not match your needs
  • Needs install and updates on each of your machines
  • Many surplus features you pay for, depending on user needs
  • Ties you strongly to Autodesk if you build the whole flow around their tools

  • Installable drafting tool with different pricing than LT
  • Fit for full-time drafters who want a classic desktop app
  • Often good DWG compatibility

Cons

  • You still install and maintain the app on every PC

  • Expensive to buy author seats for people who mostly read drawings

Free 2D CAD (LibreCAD, QCAD)

Pros

  • No license cost
  • Fine for simple sketches, learning, and one offline PC
  • Runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux (depending on the tool)

Cons

  • Weaker on heavy consultant files and fixed office print habits
  • Less support and fewer ready workflows for a contractor office
  • Rarely enough as the only drafting tool when you send official edits back

Pros

  • Free to open, measure, and print PDF
  • Good for project managers and site staff who do not need to save changes

Cons

  • No official DWG editing
  • Does not solve the need to edit and send the file back

  • Runs in the browser: Fewer installs on locked or site PCs
  • Typically cheaper than a classic CAD tool
  • 2D and 3D in the same tool
  • Map underlays for plan work
  • Broad import and export so you can work with the files you actually get and already have, including DWG and PDF import/export
  • Modules that support your day-to-day work

Cons

  • Needs an internet connection when you fetch and share files
  • The office must get used to another program if everyone only knows AutoCAD today

Bottom line

Compare pros and cons based on who must edit and what you can accept. DWG can live outside Autodesk.
